Agriculture is North Carolina’s number one industry, employing about one-fifth of the state’s workforce and generating a $111.1 billion economic impact. NC BioMISSION builds on that strength by preparing students for bioindustrial manufacturing—a growing field that uses biological systems to create high-value materials, chemicals, and products.

Distinct from the biopharmaceutical manufacturing concentrated in the Research Triangle, NC BioMISSION focuses on agriculture-based bioindustrial manufacturing in the Triad. Through collaboration among higher education, industry, workforce, and community partners, the initiative is building the skilled workforce needed to turn North Carolina’s agricultural resources into innovative, sustainable products—and to strengthen the state’s economy for years to come.

NC BioMISSION’s Undergraduate Certificate in Bioindustrial Manufacturing is open to students from every field of study. The flexible, mostly-online program combines self-paced learning with hands-on experiences, including immersive VR training and a company-led capstone project.

You’ll build practical skills, explore a fast-growing industry, and gain experience that helps prepare you for careers transforming agricultural resources into innovative bio-based products.
